Later when he was 10 his family moved to San Carlos de Bariloche. At 17 he became a photo journalist for the local newspaper and in the same year he left for Buenos Aires to register as a student with El Instituto Nacional de Cinematografía. His plans to study were prevented because of the military dictatorship then in power that was repressing intellectuals, students, and workers associated with the leftist movement. Cappellari had attempted to start the student organization (UES) in his hometown and his father Antonio Alberto Cappellari, was persecuted for implementing a socialist medical health plan in southern Argentina.
